🦉🎉 Happy International Owl Awareness Day!

Did you know there are over 200 owl species worldwide? North America alone is home to 19 of them! Owls vary greatly in size: the smallest, the Elf Owl, weighs about 40 grams (lighter than a golf ball), while the largest, the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, can weigh up to 10 pounds. Lenny, pictured here, is a Spectacled Owl and typically weighs around 700 grams.

Owls are famous for their ability to turn their heads extensively. This is due to their large eyes, which account for 3% of their body weight—ten thousand times larger than human eyes!

To celebrate International Owl Awareness Day, help local owl populations by keeping cats indoors, using raptor-safe deterrents or traps for rodents instead of poisons, and installing owl boxes.
