All Hands on Deck to Save and Restore NJ's Atlantic White Cedar Ecosystems | New Jersey Audubon | Things to Do in Cape May NJ

New Jersey Audubon is working with private landowners in the NJ Pinelands to develop and implement Forest Stewardship Plans on their property to manage for the health of Atlantic White Cedar and other species that rely on this habitat type. NJA supports the current pending Forest Bills: A4843 – Forest Planning, A4844 – Municipal Approval, A4845 – Prescribed Burning Goals, A4846 – Pinelands Coordination. NJA’s support of the forest bills is based on the best available science, considers climate risks and climate defense strategies, and promotes evidence-based management to sustain healthy forests that support a diversity of wildlife and ensure people and property are protected from wildfire. Science-based forest management is key to maintaining healthy, safe, and ecologically diverse forests, and is particularly important in New Jersey because of the state’s historic and on-going human influence, fragmentation, and disturbance of these lands.


Atlantic White Cedar (AWC) is a pioneer species with typical longevity of 200 to 300 years. However, in New Jersey AWC is only found in six counties and has lost about two-thirds of its acreage since the state began to be settled.
