All this recent rain has stirred up one of New Jersey’s most unique amphibians: the Eastern Spadefoot Toad! Occurring in southern New Jersey, the species spends most of its life burrowed underground. Once the temperature warms and the rain falls, hundreds of these strange-looking toads emerge from the ground to breed and lay their eggs. After just a few days, they’ll use their “shovel-like” hind feet to burrow back into the ground and wait, sometimes for years, for the temperature and the rain to be just right to breed again. While you’re out and about, listen for their odd call and keep an eye out for Eastern Spadefoot Toads and other amphibians!
