August 7 is National Lighthouse Day. Cape May’s first was built in 1823, but there have been THREE! The first was constructed too close to the water and was demolished in 1847. Its replacement was lit for the first time in July 1847 but construction had been hurried, and the structure became unstable. The United States Lighthouse Service built the current lighthouse 12 years later, in 1859. It was restored by Visit Cape May MAC over the course of 15 years, beginning in 1987.
