Today is Harriet Tubman Day, honored each year on the anniversary of her passing. Although parts of Tubman’s story have been lost to history, we do know that her early years were spent with her father, Ben Ross, near what is now Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. It was here where Tubman would learn the skills she’d later need to lead an estimated 70 people out of slavery and onward to freedom.
Celebrate #HarrietTubmanDay with an in-depth look at the natural and cultural significance of this historic land, and learn about the work we do to ensure these stories are preserved.
