By most books, hurricane season starts on June 1, but the Service has been preparing landscapes to rebound from storms for more than a decade.
Absorbent marshes, dynamic beaches, and open rivers are all part of a resilient watershed that can rebound from storm surges while protecting communities from the worst of flooding. Even outside of hurricane season, these resilient landscapes provide healthier habitats for wildlife. Natural defenses won’t stop the next storms from coming, but they can help minimize the damage and do a lot of good along the way.
