DID YOU KNOW? First commissioned in April 1943 as Naval Air Station Rio Grande, the airfield where WWD stands today was named due to its proximity to Rio Grande, NJ. However, due to problems with mail, telegrams, and telephone service, caused partly by confusion with Rio Grande, TX, the airfield was renamed by the U.S. Navy to NAS Wildwood later that same year.
