“Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.” – Joni Mitchell 🎵
For nearly 200 years, logging companies dug miles of ditches to drain the water from Great Dismal Swamp. This altered the ecosystem and dried the peat soils, creating an easy target for natural disasters. 🔥😬 But this year marks the 50th anniversary of Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and we’re celebrating because the water is rising again! Since the refuge was established, we’ve plugged the 150-mile network of ditches in 75 locations with water control structures to hold back water and help restore the swamp’s natural hydrology.
Happy 50th, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge! Here’s to continuing to rise to your full potential. 🥂
