Fun Fact Friday: Coastal salt marshes are one of Earth’s most productive ecosystems – second only to tropical rainforests. They support about half of North America’s bird species, they’re home to the diamondback terrapin (the only turtle that spends its life in brackish water), and they are a critical resource for a wide variety of fish. In fact, marshes support 75% of the commercial fish (and 90% of the recreational fish) caught in this country! Salt marshes provide a host of other important ecosystem services to both wildlife and our coastal communities. Wetlands Institute scientists have been studying these marshes for more than 50 years to learn about the threats they face and how we can help keep them healthy.

Stop by the Institute this weekend to learn more – and how you can help!
