G'day, mates!

Aug 16, 2024 | Cape May County Zoo

G’day, mates! It’s Darcy here to share some fun facts! Did you know that female wallabies, such as myself, can simultaneously produce two different types of milk? Right now, I’m producing one type that is formulated for a newborn joey still in the pouch, while the other is perfect for a joey who has already left! The contents of my milk change over time to accommodate the needs of my joeys. That includes the levels of fat, carbohydrates, and protein. The joey pouch milk will have a higher concentration of complex carbohydrates and low concentration of protein and fat, whereas the joey “at foot” has a milk concentration high in fat and protein, but low in carbohydrates. Talk about a custom meal!
