Happy Horseshoe Crab Day!

Happy Horseshoe Crab Day! 🎉

Every spring, hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs visit our beaches on the Delaware Bay to spawn! Despite their name, they aren’t crabs and are most closely related to scorpions and spiders. The zoo staff participates in the spawning surveys every year to help monitor the population of horseshoe crabs. Their eggs provide important nutrition for migrating shorebirds, like red knots!
