Happy National Alligator Day! 🐊

Although these dinosaur-like creatures often get a bad reputation, there is a lot to appreciate about them! Many scientists recognize American Alligators as an indicator species for the wetland ecosystems they live in. This designation signifies that if American Alligators are thriving, then the ecosystem is thriving; alternatively, if alligators are not doing well, that might indicate that the surrounding wetlands are not thriving either.

In our Education Department, Wally, the American Alligator, helps us celebrate and raise awareness about these modern-day dinos and their need for continued conservation.
