Happy Zookeeper Week: Meet our Outback Team! 🦘

Our team cares for the capybaras, kangaroos, wallabies, rheas, and emu. Our day-to-day husbandry consists of maintaining several mixed-species habitats and one yard used for capybara encounters. During warm seasons our care focuses primarily on keeping animals cool (and “capy”), with sprinklers and wallows, in addition to providing them with daily browse. In cooler seasons, most of the care is spent raking yards, providing animals with proper warmth and shelter, and keeping them “emu”sed with challenging enrichment!

Our section actively participates in SSP breeding programs and works with animals available to book for encounters. Most of our daily training involves behaviors used for medical purposes, such as tracking pregnancy or administering annual vaccines. We “hop” you enjoy visiting our Outback section! We’re located in the middle of the zoo, so you can’t miss us!
