Have you visited Battery 223?

Ever seen this concrete giant at Cape May Point, #NewJersey? It’s called Battery 223 and was part of Fort Miles, a WWII coastal defense system. Built between 1942-1943, this bunker housed heavy artillery and was manned by the US Army Coast Artillery Corps, who tirelessly scanned the horizon for enemy ships and submarines. In front were 6″ turret guns and 155MM guns. Battery 223 also served as a U.S. Navy radio transmitter station during the Korean War before being decommissioned in 1963. Originally 900 feet inland, coastal erosion has moved it, but recent sand replenishment has helped. It was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 2008. #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory
