Here’s a wildlife fact you didn’t ask for: turtles sometimes breathe through their butts.
Hear us out – this is legit science, people. In winter, turtles go into brumation (their version of hibernation), burrowing under frozen bodies of water and entering a period of inactivity. As temperatures drop, so does their metabolism, and they require less energy and oxygen to survive. To continue breathing, turtles use a method called “cloacal respiration”, which allows them to draw oxygen from water as it passes over blood vessels in their body –– specifically their hind end.
TL;DR: turtle butt-breathing!
