How could William Shakespeare pen, “Though she be but little, she is fierce” before the phenomena that was Mary Trella emerged into the world?
Though Mary was short of stature, her soul and heart knew no bounds. The story of Mary Trella is a love story. Above all, it is the story of Matt Trella who worshipped everything about Mary. It is a love story about Mary and Matt’s love for their children and grandchildren. It is a love story about Mary’s love of Cape May Stage and her willingness to do whatever necessary to ensure its survival in challenging times during her time as president of the board of directors. “Cape May Stage was her baby” said Matt Trella when he telephoned with the devastating news.
Our current board president, Leslie Martel, served as Vice-President during Mary’s tenure and said that Mary taught her so very much. Mary’s open heart and generosity made the Trella’s home on Harbor Cove, the site of board meetings as well as the housing for major artists like Karen Ziemba, Anthony Rapp and Tovah Feldshuh. Her friendship and joi de vie and sense of humor enriched all our lives.
All of us at Cape May Stage send our condolences to Matt and Kate and Michael and Christopher and Russell and Matt, Jr. and his wife. We thank the Trella family for sharing her kindness and that fierce commitment and burning passion that was Mary Trella.
