In 1944, Avenger pilot ENS Warren Burgess spotted and attacked a Japanese medium bomber that was flying close to the water. After the Avenger’s main guns jammed, Burgess flew above the bomber and tried to force it into the ocean. The bomber bounced off the surface and managed to climb.
