It is with sadness that we need to share the passing of our beloved Sebastian. A little over two weeks ago, we noticed some weakness, and we were able to have him seen by our vet right away. Testing was done, and we thought we had a diagnosis, but after treatment, he was no better. So Friday, he went back for a follow-up appointment, and the news was not good. For two days, Sebbie stayed at the hospital while our vet infused him with anything he thought might help. Unfortunately, nothing did help, and yesterday morning, the vet said it was time. He let us know that Sebbie had appeared comfortable until almost the end, even still nibbling on carrots. We were there with him as he passed, and we told him how much his many fans will miss him. ❤️ Although we still do not have medical answers, we are hoping that a detailed autopsy will provide important information that will help other alpacas in the future.
Sebastian was a little over 16 years old, and we were hoping to enjoy him for longer (alpacas can live to 20 years). He is the first alpaca that was born on our farm to pass away. He was a sweet, tolerant, mellow fellow that we nicknamed our laid-back “Surfer Dude.” Our vet commented that he was “the nicest alpaca I have ever met.” A true epithet for our Sweet Sebastian. Sebbie, we hope you have found your mother, Andina, and are grazing in green pastures.
