It’s an Endangered Species Fun Fact Friday! Piping Plovers are small, migratory shorebirds that rely on safe beaches to nest and raise their young – the same areas in which we like to recreate. Harassment by beach-goers, dogs, and vehicles and loss of beach habitat to development and sea level rise have driven sharp population declines. Every summer, The Wetlands Institute oversees two Shorebird Steward Programs. Their responsibilities include educating the public about shorebird conservation and beach closures and reducing human disturbance to these birds. Stewardship plays an integral role in improving the reproductive success of beach-nesting birds. You can help protect Piping Plovers and other beach-nesting birds by avoiding closed beaches and steering clear of beach exclosure areas. Together, we can make a difference for these wonderful birds!
