Land stewardship, wildlife monitoring, public outreach, and advocacy are complementary methods for engaging community members in urban conservation. Presenters will share a palette of case studies that highlight both the successes and challenges wrapped in transforming impacted land into community assets. These case studies will include a discussion of the ups and downs of urban forestry, how bird surveys can be used to monitor pre/post habitat restoration and identify urban oases, and the importance of public engagement in the overall process, from school classes to family programs to adult field trips and workshops. Shared discussion on partnering to achieve policy successes for urban communities will be part of the overall presentation as well. Throughout the presentations, there will be discussion of uncommon partners including business/industry, municipal and non-profit engagement.
