May is American Wetlands Month – a time to celebrate the vital role our wetlands play in the health of our environment and all the plants and animals that depend on them – including us.
Wetlands filter toxins and pollutants out of the water that flows through them, protect coastal communities from storm surge and flooding, and provide critical habitat for a variety of animals. New Jersey’s saltmarshes are home to many species of birds, a vast array of marine life (75% of commercial fish begin life in coastal saltmarshes), and the unique and wonderful Diamondback Terrapin – a species of turtle that lives only in brackish water.
For more than 50 years, The Wetlands Institute has been dedicated to studying, protecting, and teaching people about the importance of our coastal ecosystems – this rich and beautiful habitat upon which so many of us rely – and we’ve done so with your help. During American Wetlands Month, get out and visit a wetlands near you, and consider becoming a member of The Wetlands Institute or making a donation to support our critical work. It all starts with you!
