Firefighters and support staff from the FDNY boarded the 4:30 departure yesterday during their 343-mile memorial ride to honor and remember the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Organized by members of FDNY Engine 50, Ladder 19, and Battalion 26 and now in their 10th year, the riders start in Mantauk, Long Island, ride one mile for every firefighter who perished in the attacks of September 11, and end at Arlington National Cemetery at the gravesite of two FDNY firefighters killed in action in Afghanistan. Proceeds from donations go to help injured veterans, and the NJ Firechiefs Association was on site to present a $500 donation here at the terminal.
