Did you know the New Jersey wine industry dates back to colonial days? These vintage wine bottles date back to just before the turn of the century, when they were used for production at Black Rose Vineyard in Egg Harbor City founded by Civil War veteran Charles Daniel Saalmann. During that time, the bottles were filled with the vineyard’s signature wine and labeled “Black Rose”🍷
The vineyard has not been in operation for over 100 years. When Saalmann retired, he left the vineyard to his sons but they eventually gave up on the business and turned it into a vegetable farm. Fast forward to 2021, Saalmann’s family have recovered approximately 200 of these vintage bottles from the cellars on the property and are hoping to keep a part of his history alive by finding a good home for Saalmann’s collection.
