This morning we had another collection of birds feasting in the salt panne right next to the road. The diverse group included Great and Snowy Egrets, Glossy Ibis, and lots of Laughing Gulls.
Such feeding frenzies typically happen a few times a year, after certain high tides. Small fish get washed into the pannes on the incoming tide, and then become stranded when the tide recedes again – and then they become easier pickings for the birds.
