Photos from The Wetlands Institute's post | Things to Do in Cape May NJ

A somewhat unusual visitor stopped by the Institute today. Clay-colored Sparrows breed across the northern Great Plains of the US and into Canada and spend their winters in Texas and Mexico. They migrate through the middle of the continent, but every fall a few of these little sparrows stray to the west and east, migrating south along both coasts.

During fall migration, they regularly seek the company of other sparrows (or sparrow-like birds), foraging quite contentedly among them. In the fall, a search through a flock of feeding sparrows may reward the careful observer with an out-of-range Clay-colored – like our wayward visitor here. With a little luck, this one will stick around for another day or two; come on out and see if you can find it!
