What are your winter predictions? U.S. and Canadian folklore suggest the broad, brown band of the woolly bear caterpillar means a mild winter, and a narrow brown band means a severe winter.

Commonly spotted crossing roads or trails, woolly bear caterpillars often play possum when handled by rolling into a ball and keeping completely still. In the fall, wooly bear larva will hatch and then freeze completely solid during winter months, before thawing and transforming into an Isabella tiger moth in the spring and summer.
