Photos from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region's post | Things to Do in Cape May NJ

Rough green snakes are a tree-dwelling species found throughout lower elevations in the northeast region, frequently climbing in low vegetation near water. They can be hard to spot due to their impressive camouflage and are called “rough” because of their rough-looking scales that cover their bright green bodies.

In comparison, you’ll notice that the snake in the bottom photo has smooth scales, and lacks the keels, or ridges down the center of its scales. This is a smooth green snake, and they can found in marshes, meadows, and near streams in the northeast and into Canada. Both green snakes are non-venomous and have a very docile disposition!
