Property nesting success, take 2: Tree Swallows also had a fantastic year here at the Wetlands – again, the most productive since the start of the monitoring project in 2016! Pairs of these aerial acrobats took up residence in all 10 of our nest boxes, and they reared 43 fledglings (an average of just over four per pair) – and 91% of the Tree Swallow nestlings reached fledge age. This year, we constructed new, larger boxes to accommodate Tree Swallows and their large broods, and also identified more favorable locations for them, which contributed to their success.
Fun Fact:
– Tree Swallows can supplement their insect diets with fruits and berries – something no other swallow can do. This allows them to winter farther north than other swallows, and return to the breeding grounds sooner as well. #wetlandsinstitute #treeswallows #conservation
