Salt marshes play a vital role in protecting our coastal communities from storm and flood damage. Just one acre of salt marsh can absorb as much as 1.5 million gallons of floodwater, roughly the equivalent of 2 ¼ Olympic-sized swimming pools. The Wetlands Institute led the way and protected more than 15,000 acres of salt marshes surrounding Stone Harbor.
