Hi, Hermey the elf here… and I’m here with one of the newest zoo residents, Billie Jean! She is a 17-year-old Andean black bear. Why is there a fence between us? Despite being very sweet and welcoming, Billie Jean has very big teeth and claws! The zookeepers explained that they work “protected contact” with her. This means there is a barrier between the keepers and the animal. Even at the fence I had to be careful, but the zookeeper helped me safely feed Billie Jean some honey!
