Ziggy might look like he is smiling at the camera, but he is actually showing us the perfect example of a flehmen response! This behavior occurs in response to a scent and presents as a curled upper lip and bared teeth. It allows the scent to travel to the Jackobson’s organ, which is located in the nasal cavity. This behavior is most commonly seen in hooved animals and cats. So…. what do you think Ziggy smelled? 🧐
