The Story
Throughout her 30-year career, acclaimed Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer Meshell Ndegeocello has dealt in social and political commentary, exploring the politics of race and sex, among other topics, while blending elements of R&B, rock, hip-hop and jazz. In her Exit Zero Jazz Festival debut, Ndegecello and her band will be performing new material from The Omnichord Real Book, a visionary album and her Blue Note Records debut, marking a new chapter in her trailblazing career.
The Sound
A consummate electric bassist, Meshell’s heavy grooves are evident on tunes like the instrumental “Omnipuss,” the blues-imbued “Clear Water” and Afrobeat-infused numbers like “Vuma” and “ASR,” while her more lyrical, tender side comes across on the intimate “Call the Tune,” “Perceptions” and “Gatsby.”
