The Wetlands Institute is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Regional Conservation Needs Program grant from the Northeast Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, and is launching a study to help fill important gaps in understanding of the spatial distribution of diamondback terrapins to aid in their conservation. This three-year project will use cellular GPS transmitters to track terrapins within the coastal wetlands of the Delaware Bay and Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab surrounding The Wetlands Institute.
“We’re excited for the opportunity through this project to study terrapin populations near The Wetlands Institute that have not been surveyed since the mid-1990s, and to conduct work on currently unstudied populations along the Delaware Bay,” says Brian Williamson, Research Scientist at The Wetlands Institute. “Terrapins in the Delaware Bay may be at high risk from bycatch in crab fishing gear, so it is especially important we understand their movements to help inform management decisions.”
