Time to celebrate some whaley big news!!
In a rare sight, an endangered sperm whale and calf were spotted in an aerial survey of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument last month. Aerial surveys from aircraft allows scientists to cover a lot of ground and learn more about wildlife living off Cape Cod.
The October survey of the Marine National Monument also saw hundreds of dolphins, 15 ocean sunfish, four fin whales, two humpback whales, five beaked whales, and three sperm whales, including the adult and calf pair. Interestingly enough, sperm whales adults other than the mother may occasionally care for calves, including nursing, so this adult may or may not have been the calf’s mother.
