When Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, the US Army and Navy performed one of the largest “show of force” maneuvers to ever occur in war. The battleship USS Missouri on the left is visible, with the surrender taking place as this photo was taken.

A mix of over 1,000 planes took part in the show of force, which included Grumman TBF Avengers, Grumman F6F Hellcats, Curtiss SB2C Helldivers and Vought F4U Corsairs.
