You yellow-bellied sapsucker!

Wait, why does that sound like such an insult? While “yellow-bellied” may be slang for coward, it’s just a description of plumage for this courageous little sapsucker — the only migrating woodpecker! Their winter territory is from Central America, to Cuba, all the way up to the (southern states in the) Northeast. This beauty was photographed at Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge by Michael Schramm/USFWS.
